Seawolves battle Hurricanes to 1-1 tie in final home game of the season
(Saint John, NB) With a successful free kick, the Seawolves women's soccer team ended their last home game of the 2024 –25 season with a 1-1 tie against the Holland College Hurricanes on Sunday afternoon at the Canada Games Stadium.
A physical game in the first half saw some great scoring chances from both sides. With the Seawolves' starting goalie Casey Grant-Spin leaving the field due to injury, first-year Kaitlyn Brzezicki had the chance to show her skill set taking over in net for the rest of the match.
Scoreless entering the second half, Seawolves central attacking midfielder Sophie Hunt scored at the 51st minute off a free kick, sending it to the top right corner and giving UNB the lead over the Hurricanes. Holland responded shortly after with a goal from first-year forward Shania Kearney during the 59th minute.
The Hurricanes continued to play a tight defence throughout the second half, holding off the Seawolves. With a few great saves, Brzezicki held her own in net, not allowing the Hurricanes to score, and ending the game with a 1-1 tie.
With the tie, the Seawolves move 3-2-5 on the season and remain in third place in the division. The Hurricanes, 5-1-4, are sitting second overall in the conference. Both teams are setting themselves up in good positions ahead of the ACAA playoffs.
