Higgins ready to shape the future of Seawolves badminton
(Saint John, NB) The UNB Saint John Seawolves are thrilled to announce the appointment of Paul Higgins as the new head coach of the Seawolves Badminton team. Higgins brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of the sport and is eager to promote badminton's growth both in the area and across the province.
In accepting the head coach position, Coach Higgins said, "I am truly grateful to be accepted and trusted by the UNBSJ family and will reciprocate the feeling through our badminton team!"
Higgins has been a coach for the Saint John Junior Badminton Club and the head coach of Saint John High School badminton team since 2010. He has won three provincial banners with the high school team and continues to coach with both clubs, fostering relationships with players while developing local talent.
"My coaching experience, along with my playing experience, has been nothing but a positive. I have built many healthy relationships and have learned as much from the players as I hope they have from me. Adding a platform such as UNBSJ only helps me provide that kind of potential for anyone else interested in getting involved," Higgins expressed.
On the heels of an incredible season where Seawolves badminton secured silver at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Nationals, new head coach Paul Higgins is set to continue the program's success. His vision is to enhance the recognition of badminton as a competitive and respected sport.
Leveraging the UNB Saint John badminton program, Higgins looks to create strong connections between the university and high school levels. His goal is to establish a solid foundation for future student-athletes, allowing them to develop their skills, compete effectively, and continue their badminton journey even after graduation.
"Having this university team will allow for the strength and growth of that ideal environment and, in turn, may keep more of New Brunswick's local talent in the province long-term, whether it be athletically, academically, or otherwise," said Higgins.
Welcome to the Seawolves family, Paul!
